Website Design & Development

CafeX Communications provides video and real-time communications solutions to the likes of NHS, Microsoft, Rakuten, and several big banks. At the time of joining CafeX were a primarily engineering-focused company, UX/UI design and marketing was a remote concept. I joined as a senior web designer to help fill this gap.

Due to the lack of in-house design and marketing, the IT team outsourced the website design and development to multiple external agencies, which led to a mismatch of graphics and fundamental design and accessibility issues.

I was first tasked to re-design the website for their Chime product while under the spotlight due to CafeX disputing with Amazon over the name Chime. The product spoke for itself being one of the first solely online web conferencing solutions. Using a short video highlighted on the homepage, I aimed to quickly showcase the product and improve the CTA for starting a meeting. I also looked to enhance imagery, graphics and design inconsistencies across the website.

Chime Website Before and After

Including the Chime website, CafeX had multiple websites for their various products. Not only was this difficult to maintain, but it was also proving to be a poor user experience and diverted focus from the CafeX brand. I worked with the freshly appointed CMO to develop a strategy to consolidate the websites, re-designing the main website to have sub-product feature pages, and a new resources area and blog to increase outreach.

On a technical note, I built the new websites integrating DjangoCMS as the content management system, allowing the newly established marketing team to edit the content easily. I had to learn python and Django in a short time with the help of great engineers.

Design System

Multiple silo teams of engineers, often using different frameworks, led to a mismatch in UX/UI across products and websites. While designing the websites, I created a library in Sketch to form the start of a design system.

To help gain stakeholder buy-in, I mocked up concepts applying the style to our existing products.

Brand Design

CafeX settled on a deal to transfer all rights of the name Chime to Amazon. During the same time, CafeX also acquired a new product (Vayoo) and decided to discontinue it's Supervisor Assist product. All of this resulted in looking at how the brand was positioned moving forward. I designed new logos for the Spaces and Meetings products, featuring simple iconography to convey the product's purpose inline with the existing LiveAsist logo.
